If we were having coffee…

If we were having coffee…

I would tell you about my week, I would share with you my highlights and lowlights

If we were having coffee…

I would giggle with you about the latest gossip, and laugh about random memories that we shared together

If we were having coffee…

I would vent to you about everything that I had kept bottled up inside me and just let the words flow, because I know there is no judgement between us

If we were having coffee…

I would listen to you with and open heart wanting to know how you have been, and no I don’t mean just the casual “how are you” “good, you?”, I want you to tell me how you’ve been feeling, what’s your highlight of the week, month or year; I want you to tell me why you’ve been feeling down and I want to be able to help

If we were having coffee…

I would want us to bounce crazy ideas off each other, plan adventures, even if we know they’d never happen

If we were having coffee…

I want us to laugh until we can’t breathe, and attract annoyed death-stares from other coffee lovers around us, because it means we’re having coffee the right way

If we were having coffee…

I would want us to give advice to each other and solve each other’s problems even if  we know we’re not wise enough, but we know it makes us feel better

If we were having coffee…

I want us to lose track of time from talking so much

Unfortunately, when we’re having coffee now…

Our phones sit right beside our hand, in close proximity to our fingers and eyes, providing us with convenience to dart our eyes to the time, or whenever the phone lights up because our mind is somewhere else

Unfortunately, when we’re having coffee now…

We play “wait up” because we constantly need to reply to group texts or snapchats, since we don’t have the ability to put that urge away and in our bag for however long our coffee time is

Unfortunately, when we’re having coffee now…

There is always someone more important on the other side of the screen, so you don’t really listen when I vent, or when I tell you the latest gossip, or when I tell you my highlights

Unfortunately, when we’re having coffee now…

There is a lot of ‘awkward silence’ because I’m waiting for you to finish captioning the photo of our breakfast, so I immediately go on my phone because I can’t stand the awkward waiting around

Unfortunately, when we’re having coffee now…

We get too caught up watching what other people are doing with their time in 10 second intervals because our attention span is too short to focus on the moment we’re in

That’s the problem today, we spend more time messaging and reading into other people’s life through social media that we forget about those in front of us who won’t always be there. We spend more time telling random not-so-close ‘friends’ on our Facebook page about our problems than we do with our friends or family. We spend too much time looking for validation on social media, waiting patiently for your ‘likes’ to increase, and people to comment on our posts saying we’re beautiful, who probably won’t be there when you look like a hot mess; instead of spending time with your loved one who are always going to be there for you no matter how you look or dress.

I hope one day when we do have coffee…

We can put away our phones and communicate in real-life, with no distractions from social media and live together in that moment which we will only get once

Until then,

Keep Smiling
