Top 10 WORST advice/quotes we’ve heard about motivation

Look at that cute lego man, I don’t know why, but I just think it’s relevant to the situation! Anyway, moving on!

So it’s that time of the year again. We’ve reached mid year, for some school kids and university students, it’s almost exam time and for VCE kids they’re nearly reaching the end.

It’s the middle of the year, which means at this stage we’re already sick of school, or our work. We all seek that extra boost of motivation to get us going again, to help us go through those nasty exams, or the never-ending assignments.

So, we attend the motivational lectures, go on YouTube and type “Things to keep you motivated,” or even the good ol’ search on Google for “inspirational quotes.”

But, is it just me or do some of you come across the tackiest “inspirational” quotes and the most cliché “motivational” talks that just have you sitting there like “well no shit, Mickey Mouse taught me that one!”

So I went on a hunt, on the wonderful World Wide Web, to pick out the worst motivational advice and here are my Top 10!

  1. Shoot for the moon. Even if you fail, you’ll land among the stars.
Okay I don’t know about you guys, but when I aim really high, and I don’t reach it, I feel pretty crap. Never have I felt like I was chilling with sparkly stars, because if I was, trust me I would know! Also has anyone thought of this quote literally? I’m no astronomer, but the moon is closer than the stars…so let’s say we aimed for the moon and failed, we won’t end up anywhere near those pdumboretty stars.
  2. You can if you believe!
There’s the motivation I learnt from Disney! Sadly when you’re mature enough to know that elephants can’t fly with their big ears, this no longer gives you motivation. This just reminds me of the show Bob the builder; “Bob the builder, can he fix it? Bob the builder, yes he can!” Well bloody hell, what if Bob doesn’t want to fix it…I’m going off topic…point is, if someone was to tell me this at a point of crisis, It’ll probably make me feel worse because I have the worst advisor ever!
  1. Follow your dreams, they know the way
Inspirational? Maybe…Helpful? Not really! Yes, everyone should follow their dreams, but they should also be realistic. Like, when I was a kid I wanted to be a Pop Star…. as much as I dream, there’s no auto tune that can fix my ‘dying cat’ voice. Some dreams are just better to stay in the shower.
  1. Go for the money and then go for what you like
Okay this one I received from you guys…. Whoever told you this; fire them as your mentor or advisor, because that’s terrible advice! (If it’s your mum…tell her I love her very much). Definitely always do what you like, don’t listen to those who tell you “There are no jobs in that field” or “They don’t pay very much”. Trust me, if you are passionate about what you’re doing, you’re going to be determined to make it a living!tink
  1. Trust your wings and you will fly
What wings!! If I had wings I wouldn’t be coming to you for advice, but I don’t! So don’t go convincing me and giving me false hope, that I have magical wings…. Gosh!
  1. Make things happen
Okay I get the phrase, when someone tells you “You can make it happen if you really want it”, but when I am juggling 10 assignments, work and social events, it would be a bad time to come and tell me that I can make things happen, because I came to you to motivate me, not make me ask philosophical questions about life, like “Why do I want fries with that?” Again…off topic…but by now we should have a mutual understanding.
  1. If you don’t like something change it, If you can’t change it, change your attitude.
This is another one you guys suggested to me…this just sounds harsh! If I was to read this for motivation…I think it’d just make me more confused, and stressed. Like first I had to work on fixing these problems that I have, and now you’re telling me to fix myself…It’s just too much!
  1. curiousYou don’t know until you know…
Does this even make sense? I’ve read this about 10 times, and all it’s made me do is question life…doesn’t that contradict the whole situation? I’m out on the search to decrease my stress levels, and you got me sitting here questioning life, instead of doing my assignments!
  1. You can do anything if you have enthusiasm
Well…ummm…I don’t….that’s why I came to you Google! To give me enthusiasm!
  1. If your dreams don’t scare you, they’re not big enough
Aren’t dreams meant to be part of your fantasy? Aren’t they meant to be exciting and happy! If it scares you well…. It’s no longer a dream; it’s just a nightmare!

Moral of this article…sometimes those random motivational quotes are absolutely pointless and not helpful at all. However, don’t worry, I’m not going to just leave you guys with no motivation to go about your day! Here’s your motivational boost for the day (Hopefully!).

‘If you can’t fly, then run
If you can’t run, then walk
If you can’t walk, then crawl,
but whatever you do,
you have to keep moving forward.’ – Martin Luther King Jr.

Enjoy the rest of your week/day and I’ll see you all next week!

Keep Smiling
